Rehab is never easy. It can be physically challenging, requiring persistent effort over many months, and mentally taxing, involving a complex mix of frustration, hope and sometimes fear.

“As a surgeon and someone who’s gone through rehab myself, there’s a huge mental component to it. The POSM Performance Lab helps patients get some confidence back because we’ve examined the research literature, created condition-specific recovery pathways and we can say that if you’re hitting these markers, you’re on track. And if you’re not quite there yet, we can keep working with you until those objective markers say you are ready.”

Housed within the POSM Research Institute, the POSM Performance Lab is staffed by some of Western Australia’s leading researchers, sports physiotherapists and exercise physiologists with extensive input from orthopaedic surgeons.

Your performance assessment

Our advanced clinical care team will complete several performance assessments during your recovery and before returning to sport.

Your performance assessment helps to
Monitor your recovery
Guide your rehabilitation goals
Determine your readiness for returning to sport

Successfully progressing through these performance assessments may increase the likelihood of returning to sport and reduce the risk of secondary injury and long-term dysfunction.

These performance assessments can be especially useful in late-stage rehabilitation. They help you and your clinicians determine when you’re ready to move from exercising in a controlled environment to the far more demanding and unpredictable conditions on the pitch.

We translate the numerical results of your assessment into an easy-to-follow report, which we send to you, your surgeon and your physiotherapist. This provides vital insights about your recovery, increasing your confidence in your body’s capacity to cope with the demands of your sport.

Accessing the POSM Performance Lab

You don’t need a referral to access the POSM Performance Lab. You can simply book a direct appointment to see our physiotherapists or accredited exercise physiologists.

However, a referral can often be quite helpful to our team. When your GP, surgeon or allied health professional refers you, they will usually provide details of your clinical history and concerns, which can inform your care at the POSM Performance Lab.
